Shared Sequencers

With many new rollups launching (each with their own structures!) I thought it would be worthwhile to give an overview of the benefits of shared sequencers.


A rollup sequencer is a node that that picks up rollup transactions from L2 mempools, batches the transactions together, and then finalizes the transactions on Ethereum.


The major rollups all have centralized sequencers except Metis. Decentralizing the sequencer is important because it transitions rollups from a network built on trust to a trustless environment.
