Scaling ETH L1: Is 100x Enough?

A recent proposal (EIP-9698) by Dankrad was made to exponentially raise the gas limit on the L1. The plan would scale Ethereum’s gas limit by 100x over the course of four years. This comes at a time when sentiment around Ethereum has hit an all-time-low. And I’d argue that this sudden change in tone from the EF and the Ethereum community is also partially influenced by the lack of performance of ETH over the last three years.

Of course, CT is divided on the implications of this proposal and how to interpret the sudden change in priorities. On one end, many are hopeful that this pivot (and yes, I believe it is a pivot) might bring back some relevance to the EVM; while many others (namely ETH-maxis) believe this has always been a part of the roadmap referring to it as a “reprioritization”.

Let’s not fool ourselves with terminology semantics here. For the past four years, the main scaling approach for Ethereum has hinged on the success of the rollup-centric roadmap. For years the scaling issues were outsourced to others to solve while it was encouraged for users to move onto the rollups. And it succeeded. But it came with the cost of abstracting much of the value along with it – and hence why there is a sudden “pivot” in senti
