📊 Can ‘Free-To-Own’ Blockchain Games Succeed?

  • Floor prices for DigiDaigaku NFTs doubled to 14 ETH after Limit Break announced a $200m funding round on August 29th. Daily volume also surged significantly on the announcement.
  • DigiDaigaku is a collection of 2,022 NFTs developed by Limit Break, a company that’s building massive multiplayer online games.
  • Limit Break is introducing a new model of monetization called ‘Free-to-Own’ where players are allowed to mint Genesis NFTs for free. These NFTs are expected to receive airdrops and other rewards over time.
  • DigiDaigaku NFTs were available as a free mint when they were initially launched less than 30 days ago. Holders who qualify for tomorrow’s snapshot will be airdropped an unseen NFT collection titled Bloodlines.
  • The free-to-own model is often criticized for leaking value to early community members. Players who discover the game after the free mint still need to buy the NFTs on the secondary market.

⚡ 10KTF: An Immersive Storytelling Experience Using NFTs

  • 10KTF is an immersive storytelling experience using NFTs, where everyone collectively participates and shapes the direction of the project. It tells the story of Wagmi-San, a digital artisan who runs a shop in New Tokyo famous for its prized accessories.
  • The story is told through comic-book graphics and cinematic short videos released every Thursday through the main Twitter account. Think of it as a long-running TV drama series in which you get to play a part. This has nurtured a community of fans and staunch believers.
  • 10KTF is one of the more complex NFT ecosystems today that will require some time and additional resources  to digest on your own. In a nutshell, 10KTF is a derivative project that is linked to many of the top PFPs including Bored Apes, World of Women & Cool Cats.
    • You can craft unique accessories for your PFPs, including shoes, backpacks, and caps. This is done by minting your PFP onto a Blank accessory (an NFT).
    • Blank Accessories are made using stockroom items (also NFTs) and converted on the 10KTF website.

  • Battle.Town is where the action happens. You can send avatars equipped with 10KTF items to join Missions in the ongoing battle for New Tokyo. To do so, you sign in with your wallet containing the NFTs, and register to join a mission.
  • After completing a mission (which usually takes 48 hours to resolve once it starts), rewards are awarded based on each player’s equipment loadout. Different items have different base powers, based on rarity and matching.
  • Rewards for participating in previous missions have included Badges, Combat Crates, crafting materials, and $APE tokens.
  • Today, we are in Act 2, where the evil villain, Boss_toadz has unleashed a Kaiju on New Tokyo. Teams need to band together with Wagmi-san and friends to save the city.
  • A new set of combat items (Level 2 items) have just been released this month, with higher base powers than the previous accessories (Level 1 items). To craft Level 2 items, you need a Combat Blank which is obtained at random from opening a Combat Crate.
