Scientific progress is bottlenecked by the speed of experimentation. Self-driving labs (SDLs), where AI and robotics combine to autonomously execute scientific experiments, directly address this constraint by closing the design-make-test-analyze loop and decreasing the cost per datapoint of scientific research as utilization climbs.

This deck maps the SDL ecosystem across its full value chain. On the hardware layer, incumbents consolidate around integrated workcells through active M&A while automation-native startups bet on modularity. On the software layer, value migrates upward from the commoditizing execution-orchestration tier toward the intelligence layer and the proprietary, provenance-linked data it generates.
